On line Objectives:
To learn:
- What drives the decisions of individuals, firms and nations
- How markets operate and when Government is needed to make them work better
- What economic growth is, why it is important and how it is generated
Having studied all the modules users should understand the fundamentals of microeconomics and macroeconomics and how the business environment operates
The package comprises of nine modules:
- Introduction to microeconomics – What is economics? Why do markets fail? What is the role of Government in the economy?– Later in the Autumn there will be an extra module providing more detail about market failures and government's role
- Supply and demand – How do markets work? What factors affect the supply or demand for different goods? What determines the price of a product? Why does Government regulate?
- Market structures, costs and revenues – How do firms decide what, and how much, to produce? How do they maximise profit? Why is competition important?
- Money and banking – What are the key institutions in financial markets and how do they interact?
- Financial Institutions – What are bills, bonds and derivatives? What is the role of the SFA?
- Capital investments – Which measures can you use to examine the health of a business? How can you appraise investment opportunities?
- Macroeconomics – What is GDP? What is economic growth? Why is it important? Why do we have fiscal and monetary policy?
- International trade – Why do countries trade? How do countries decide what to export and what to import? Why do exchange rates vary and what is the effect of this?
- Policy examples – Economic examples from different areas of BIS work, to give you some further context
Each module will take you one to two hours. You can do them at your own pace and pick up a module where you left off part way through using the ‘resume' button.
